UN International Day of Peace, 2009

AFCOPB and Peace Secretariat Celebrates UNIPD

21st September 2009, marked a very important day in the life of every Ghanaian. Marking the 100th birthday of our founder and leader the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah it was also the day for the celebration of the International Peace Day.
The Peace Secretariat and African Centre for Peace Building on this day appealed to the Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Honorable Samuel Sarpong to declare a peace proclamation for the Peace Day at the Faculty of Law Auditorium, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The event was under the theme “the role of Kwame Nkrumah in the Foundation of Peace in Ghana” and was the first of its kind in the country, making the Mayor the first to declare a Peace Proclamation in the country.

The event which was chaired by the Protestant Chaplain of KNUST, Rev. Dr. Paul Boafo was witnessed by lecturers and members of Senior Staff, KNUST, the media, students and the general public. Also present at the event were Prof. M.L.K. Mensah, Dean of Students-KNUST, Catholic Chaplain of KNUST, Rev Fr. Prof. Appiah, Representatives from the Muslim Community-KNUST, Executives of the Student Representative Council-KNUST, Executives of the Local NUGS, Executives of Halls of Residences, Executives of Colleges, Faculties, and Departmental Associations.

The Proclamation was then signed by various student leaders from the SRC, Colleges,

Faculties, Halls of Residence, Departments, various religious denominations of KNUST. This was led by the President of the National Union of Ghana Students, Mr. Wonder Madilo.
This was in support of a call by the United Nations that urges all leaders to make strong commitments and to proclaim to all people, to be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.
As part of the event, Peace Messages were received from the Pro Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. W.O. Ellis, the Protestant Chaplain, the Dean of Students, NUGS President, the Protestant Chaplain and Peace Poem form Emmanuel K. Senyo Kumedzina- 'Let Peace Rain'
In establishing the International Day of Peace, the United Nations General Assembly decided that it would be appropriate:

"to devote a specific time to concentrate the efforts of the United Nations and its Member States, as well as of the whole of mankind, to promoting the ideals of peace and to giving positive evidence of their commitment to peace in all viable ways. (The International Day of Peace) should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples”
